Off the Beaten Track
The views that are hidden from the main roads and tracks (in both a factual and metaphorical sense). The feeling of stepping off the path in search of the exhilaration of the unknown. We hope you can join us in the cosy safety of our four walls to taste this feeling that the artists have depicted so beautifully. We're thrilled to be showing some amazing work from five very talented North Yorkshire artists.

‘Off the Beaten Track’, for me, whilst roaming the countryside – is capturing those unexpected moments – blue turning to periwinkle as the sun lowers in the sky; dramatic cloud formations over the North Yorkshire Moors; the energy of the weather and its impact on the earth, the colours it brings; long grasses blowing in the breeze; a touch of light on a distant cornfield – a fleeting glimpse, etched in memory.
My aim is to capture the essence of my muse, moving between abstract composition and the ephemeral nature of the landscape.
Working intuitively, I let the artwork evolve on its own – often painting over numerous layers until it becomes what it wants to be.

Curlews are recognised to be critically endangered due to a combination of a change in land use, agricultural practises and predators making it difficult for them to successfully raise their young. I’m very fortunate to live in an area where I can hear them from my studio and see them when I’m walking and running. During the summer months, I often go out in the evening and look for them and if I stand quietly where I can’t be seen, I can observe them feeding in the meadows or flying across the fells.

Waymarks Moonrise on the Ribble
This print was inspired by an evening walk along the Ribble this year as the Wolf Moon rose. During the winter months, I often walk or run as it gets dark when most people have settled in for the evening. I love the crepuscular time when birds are flying to roost and the nocturnal creatures are waking up. On this occasion, the sky turned the most incredible pink and purple and the reflection of the moon on the water appeared to follow me all the wayhis print was inspired by an evening walk along the Ribble this year as the Wolf Moon rose.
