The River Runs Through
May 10th 2024 - July 22nd
Rivers are central to our lives, our heritage and folklore. They carve our land, support wildlife and provide so much of our water. Increasingly how we look after our rivers, how we deal with flooding and pollution is at the forefront of many conversations. This exhibition looks at rivers from the perspective of many different artists and makers.
Martin Truefitt-Baker
Martin has a studio in the Brecon Beacons in Wales where he is influenced by his beautiful surroundings. He trained as a graphic artist and illustrator, with some print making and book design. He spent years in Art and Design and education, but in the past few years has returned to concentrating on producing his own work.
Martin now mainly produces acrylic and watercolour paintings and some hand printed, very limited edition, linocut prints. Some of his prints show links to his earlier work as an illustrator.
He is often seen out with his camera and sketch book looking for inspiration that expresses the spirit and beauty in the changing light, landscape and wildlife which is becoming increasingly important in his work.

Jo McChesney
Jo McChesney specialised in print after graduating from Bath Academy of Art in 1985. She travelled to Japan to study Japanese woodblock printmaking, and combines her knowledge of traditional Japanese printing techniques with a distinctly western approach to image making. Her latest prints incorporate dry point engraving besides woodcut.
Seasonal change in the natural world is the source of inspiration for her work, focusing on transient moments in time, water and air.
Recent work is based on the theme of seeds and dispersal, drawing attention to natural unseen fleeting happenings, evoking the continual change and flux of the natural world.

Lyn Bailey
Lyn lives and works on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, and is inspired everyday by the vast landscapes and varied wildlife found on her doorstep. Lyn's training as a graphic designer has allowed her to transfer her skills of using simple block colour and shapes to the more tactile process of printmaking.
Fundamentally each print begins with a simple walk, observing and connecting with her surroundings from the heart of the landscape. This collection of The River Runs Through linoprints reflects the colours and forms of the rivers of the National Park.
Working in small print runs, her designs develop organically from a simple sketch; decisions are made and altered throughout the cutting and printing process as the image emerges through the mark making.
