November Poppies, Masham
Original watercolour painting, created by Ian Scott Massie with artists' quality paint on specially made paper, signed by the artist
'Masham’s war memorial contains names which still populate the town. There was only one tragic night here during WW2 but it cast a long shadow. A German bomber carrying shipping mines was pursued from Teeside by a fighter. They lightened their load by dumping the mines which, unfortunately, fell on the White Bear pub at the end of Silver Street. The blast flattened the pub, blew out windows all over town, including one of stained glass in the church, and took the roof of several buildings including the joiner’s workshop just behind Masham Gallery. Remarkably only six people were killed. One remarkable survival from the pub was a polar bear in a glass case - it now stands in the new White Bear.'
