Joanna Bourne
|
A printmaker based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Joanna works primarily in woodcut, drawn to its directness, rhythm and quiet physicality. Earlier explorations in etching, drypoint and lithography still inform her work, but it is the carved line and the process of relief printing that continue to hold her attention.
She studied Fine Art at Newcastle University in the 1980s, where her interest in printmaking first took root, going on to become a member of Charlotte Press in the late 1980s. Printmaking has remained a constant thread for over thirty years, though not always continuously, years spent raising a family meant the tools were set aside for a time, before gradually being picked up again. For the past twelve years she has been a member of Northern Print. Joanna's practice is now based at home, shaped around a recently acquired Albion Press - a welcome shift from earlier days of printing by hand with little more than a wooden spoon and persistence. |
Woodcuts inspired by the local landscape.
