The cuckoo has long held a place in folklore as a symbol of change, forewarning, and liminality. Its spring call

heralds new seasons, fertility, and renewal, yet also carries omens and deception, reflecting its notorious habit of laying eggs in other birds’ nests—a trait that inspired the term “cuckold” and associations with sexual trickery. Across cultures, the cuckoo acts as a messenger between worlds, signalling both growth and disruption, promise and peril, reminding all that life’s gifts are intertwined with cunning, desire, and transformation.
