For almost forty years the Yorkshire Dales have been Ian Scott Massie’s home. Over time, familiarity has never diminished their power. If anything, it has deepened his reverence for a landscape shaped by weather, time and the quiet resilience of those who have lived and worked here for generations.
The Striding Dales is an exhibition about being in the landscape rather than simply looking at it.
The Yorkshire Dales are not gentle. They are windswept, weathered, immense and endlessly changing. They can make us feel small, yet somehow more ourselves. It is that feeling, rather than the view itself, that Ian Scott Massie paints.
His paintings are not records of a particular day or place. They are expressions of something more enduring: the weight of gathering cloud, the exhilaration of light breaking across limestone, the stillness that settles over a valley at dusk, the quiet strength of a lone tree holding its ground against the weather.
There is deep affection here, but also respect. A recognition that this landscape does not belong to us. We belong, for a little while, within it. Its hills, skies and changing weather continue to shape us, just as they have shaped generations before us.
These paintings invite us to pause, to look beyond the familiar outline of a fell or valley and encounter the presence of the Dales themselves—wild, generous, dramatic and enduring.
