'The meadow where the river flows down to
Masham bridge is the Lang Thwaite, which
locally we call Lanquit. A beautiful place
where sand martins burrow in the river banks
and otters and kingfishers occasionally show
themselves.'

'Looking across the Shooting Holme beside the
River Ure, hinting at buttercups in the grass, I’ve
made the church and the Town Hall the only
buildings to really feature. I wanted to make
Masham look as special as it feels to me, with a
halo of light crowning the town.'

century and it became a widely admired
attraction. Now a wild forest, with ruined follies
it’s a hauntingly lovely place, just a couple of
