Masham - a particular place
Artists have been drawn here for centuries — by the light, the land, and the quiet insistence of the place itself.
Creativity in Masham is not something preserved or remembered.
It continues.
place & practice

Painters, printmakers, poets and makers still respond to this landscape — to the river, the hills, the streets and the seasons. Some live here. Others return again and again. Many work in long conversation with the place.
Their work is shaped by attention: to material, to process, to the slow unfolding of ideas. It reflects a way of working that values depth over speed, and connection over scale. Masham Gallery has grown from this context. For more than thirty years, the gallery has shown contemporary art and craft rooted in place, story and making — work that takes time, holds meaning, and resists easy categorisation. This page began as an exhibition in 2024, but its focus remains ongoing. The artists and works gathered here are part of a continuing relationship with Masham — not a moment in time, but a shared attention to landscape, memory and lived experience. Some of this work has been shown before. Much of it is still being made. Place is not a backdrop here. It is an active presence. |

themselves.'

Masham from the Bridge
An Open Edition Print
'Looking across the Shooting Holme beside the
River Ure, hinting at buttercups in the grass, I’ve
made the church and the Town Hall the only

Masham look as special as it feels to me, with a
halo of light crowning the town.'
