Edgelands brings together the work of printmakers Jo Bourne, Janis Goodman and Angela Hall in an exhibition shaped by places that exist between categories. Between town and countryside. Between memory and observation. Between what is tended and what is left to grow wild.
Borrowing its title from the overlooked margins of our landscape, Edgelands explores places of transition and quiet persistence. These are the railway embankments, allotment edges, forgotten corners and shifting boundaries where stories accumulate and nature finds its own way back.
Although their subject matter often overlaps, each artist arrives there through a different printmaking process. Jo Bourne's woodcuts, Angela Hall's screenprints and Janis Goodman's etchings each bring their own rhythm, texture and way of describing place. Together they offer three distinct responses to the landscapes that surround us, and to the beauty that can be found at the edges of things.

Joanna Bourne
A printmaker based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Joanna works primarily in woodcut, drawn to its rhythm, directness and quiet physicality. Her prints often explore edgelands and transitional landscapes, finding atmosphere and memory in overlooked places.
She studied Fine Art at Newcastle University in the 1980s and has worked in printmaking for over thirty years. A member of Northern Print for the past twelve years, she now works from her home studio using an Albion Press.

Janis Goodman
Janis Goodman creates limited-edition etchings exploring structure, rhythm and pattern within both urban and natural landscapes. Rooftops, allotments and overlooked corners are distilled into carefully ordered compositions shaped by her background in architecture and cartooning.
Working from her Leeds studio, each print is individually inked, printed and signed by hand in small editions. Janis has exhibited regularly with The Masham Gallery for over twenty years, we have also published two books of her work.

Angela Hall
Angela Hall is a Yorkshire-based printmaker whose work draws inspiration from everyday landscapes and environmental themes. Working primarily in silkscreen, her prints begin as sketchbook observations before being developed through hand-painted acetates, Indian ink and collage into expressive, hand-pulled screenprints.
Her practice is characterised by simple, carefully observed imagery and a strong sense of place, balancing bold composition with an immediacy that comes from the hand-printing process in her studio. Angela has just written a book about the screen printing processes and techniques.
