The courses take place in the beautiful market town of Masham in Wensleydale, famous for its two breweries - Black Sheep and Theakston - and its annual Sheep Fair. Each course lasts from 10 am to 4 pm and there are breaks for tea, coffee and biscuits and an excellent buffet lunch which is included in the course payment.
The venue is usually Masham’s Methodist Church Hall, Park Street. Masham is easily reached by following the A6108 from Ripon or Leyburn or the B6267 from the A1 and Thirsk. The hall is behind the Methodist Church on Park Street. There is ample free parking. The tutors: Hester Cox is a renowned printmaker whose work sells in many galleries around Britain. An experienced tutor, Hester has an extensive knowledge of traditional and contemporary printing techniques.

This course provides a day of innovative and enjoyable approaches to drawing. Suitable for all. Friday 5th Feb A workshop in a water soluble medium which has become increasingly popular for its versatility and ability to convey detail. Suitable for all. Materials provided. This course is designed so you can try all of these & more to find your inner artist! £40 The course fee includes all materials, refreshments and lunch. Friday 19th Mar Monoprint, intaglio, relief, offset, reduction, drypoint, chine colle...ever wondered what these words mean? Join printmaker Hester Cox to find out! Hester will not only explain and demonstrate some of these exciting methods but you will then get a chance to create your own images using some of these printmaking techniques. This course is suitable for complete beginners and artists who would like to explore a new medium. Materials provided. Friday 9th April Although the concept of abstract art has been with us for nearly 150 years it is little understood by many of us. Learn how it offers liberation, allows expression, and helps you play to your strengths through colour, form and texture. Friday 16th April Combining the ideas which underpin a strong composition with the constructive use of colour to create landscape and still life paintings. Suitable for all. Friday 14th May A course covering the basic principles and materials of watercolour,showing both its flexibility and vibrancy. This course is suitable for complete beginners and artists who would like to explore a new medium. Thursday/Friday 21st/22nd May This two-day workshop gives participants the chance to explore this diverse method of printmaking with well-known collagraph printmaker, Hester Cox. Use a variety of natural and found materials to build a collaged plate that can be printed without the use of harsh chemicals to create a beautiful, textural image inspired by the natural landscape. Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists. Materials provided. Friday 4th June Acrylic paint is a lovely medium to paint with a knife. Its soft buttery texture allows great surface effects, subtle mixing and bold statements. Come and be amazed at what happens when you throw away the brush. Suitable for all. Friday 18th June A course which looks at photographs as an inspiration for painting, using the camera as a sketchbook and how to draw the most creative ideas from your own images. Friday 2nd July A days painting course exploring the techniques used by early watercolourists such as Cotman and Turner. This will be a journey through the history of watercolour and the development of the medium. Suitable for all.
